BabyCatAGI
BabyCatAGI is a lightweight, open-source autonomous AI agent that iterates on the concepts introduced by BabyAGI and BabyBeeAGI. Written in approximately 300 lines of code, it is designed to be simple and hackable, running on Replit. The agent architecture differs from its predecessors in key ways: the Task Creation Agent runs only once to generate a list of tasks from a user-provided objective, then an Execution Agent loops through those tasks sequentially, respecting dependencies where relevant results from prior tasks can be pulled in. It utilizes two main tools: a search_tool, which is itself a 'mini-agent' combining web search, content scraping, text chunking, and extraction, and a text_completion tool powered by OpenAI's API. Optionally, it can integrate SerpAPI for enhanced search capabilities. Once all tasks are completed, the results are combined to generate a summary report. Users simply set an OBJECTIVE, provide their API keys, and run the script, making it an accessible entry point for experimenting with autonomous AI agents.

Problem solved
Individuals and developers who need to automate complex research or multi-step tasks face the challenge of manually breaking down objectives and gathering information. BabyCatAGI solves this by autonomously decomposing a user-defined objective into a set of tasks, executing them using web search and language model capabilities, and compiling the findings into a concise summary report, thereby saving time and reducing manual effort.
Use cases
- Automated research on a specific topic and generation of a structured summary report
- Rapid prototyping of task-driven AI agents for educational purposes
- Simple workflow automation, such as gathering and synthesizing information from multiple web sources
- Experimentation with lightweight agent architectures before scaling to production systems
- Assisting in content creation by compiling relevant data and insights from the web
Audience
- Developers
- Researchers
- Hobbyists
Pros
- Extremely lightweight and easy to understand (300 lines of code)
- Simple setup with minimal dependencies (requires only API keys)
- Combines search, scraping, and extraction seamlessly via a mini-agent
- Generates a summary report consolidating all task outcomes
- Open-source and hackable for custom modifications
Cons
- Task creation runs only once, limiting adaptability to dynamic changes during execution
- Relies on external APIs (OpenAI, SerpAPI) incurring costs and dependency risks
- Not suitable for production-grade or highly complex task sequences
