Overview

Beacon is a keyboard-first desktop API client for macOS, designed as a local-first alternative to tools like Postman and Insomnia. It allows users to compose HTTP requests, chain them into flows, script tests, mock APIs, and explore responses interactively, all while keeping data stored locally on the machine. The tool emphasizes speed and efficiency through keyboard-centric workflows, including a URL bar that doubles as a command palette. It supports GraphQL queries with schema explorer, multiple authentication methods (OAuth 2.0 with PKCE, bearer, basic, API key), environment variables with secret masking, and code generation to ten programming languages. Beacon provides advanced response inspection capabilities, such as a living JSON tree with search and pinning, diffing across sends, watch mode for live dashboards, and request timeline analysis. It also includes organizing features like hierarchical collections with inherited auth and headers, find-and-replace across collections, and importing from Postman, OpenAPI, Swagger, or HAR files. Additional capabilities include a collection runner with data-driven iterations, load testing with virtual users and percentile metrics, and built-in themes including Bloom shades. Beacon is free, requires no account, and is distributed via an install script, Homebrew cask, or direct DMG download.
