ChatDev
ChatDev is an open-source framework that simulates a virtual software company powered by large language models (LLMs). Inspired by the waterfall model, it orchestrates multiple AI agents, each assigned to specific roles such as CEO, CTO, designer, programmer, and tester. These agents communicate through natural language chat to collaboratively transform a user’s high-level requirement into a complete software product, including source code, user documentation, and test cases. The entire development process is broken into sequential phases—analysis, design, coding, testing, and documentation—mirroring real-world software engineering practices. The framework is highly customizable, allowing users to define agent roles, communication protocols, and phase-specific workflows. It integrates with Git for version control and features a persistent memory module (Mem0) that enables agents to retain context across sessions and projects. A built-in web interface provides real-time visualization of agent interactions and workflow progress. ChatDev is designed to be LLM-agnostic, supporting multiple providers through a simple configuration file. Implemented in Python, it can be deployed locally or on a server, making it accessible for both individual experimentation and team environments. ChatDev represents a significant exploration into automated software development, demonstrating how multi-agent collaboration can mitigate the limitations of single-agent coding tools. It is particularly adept at rapid prototyping, educational demonstrations, and academic research on LLM-based software generation. Maintained by the OpenBMB community, the project sees active development with frequent updates, an expanding set of agent skills, and a growing ecosystem of community contributions.

Problem solved
Software development often requires translating complex human requirements into code, a process that is time-consuming, error-prone, and inaccessible to non-experts. ChatDev addresses this challenge by automating the entire software creation lifecycle through multi-agent collaboration. Users simply describe their desired software in natural language, and the AI agents collectively handle requirement analysis, system design, coding, testing, and documentation. This dramatically lowers the barrier to software creation, accelerates prototyping, and reduces the manual effort needed for small to medium-sized projects.
Use cases
- Rapid prototyping of web applications from a plain-text description
- Automated generation of small utility scripts or automation tools on demand
- Creating simple games (e.g., Tetris, Snake) to test game design ideas
- Producing boilerplate code and basic test suites for new software projects
- Educational demonstrations of software engineering workflows facilitated by AI
- Research on multi-agent systems and LLM-driven software generation
Audience
- Developers
- Researchers
- Hobbyists
- Startups
Pros
- Full lifecycle automation from requirement to deliverable
- Modular design with customizable agent roles and workflows
- Active open-source community and frequent updates
- Supports multiple LLM backends for flexibility and cost control
- User-friendly web interface for real-time monitoring and interaction
Cons
- Generated code quality can be inconsistent and often requires manual review
- Best suited for relatively simple, small-scale applications; struggles with complex, real-world systems
- Can incur significant LLM API costs and computational overhead for intensive use
