CLIP (Contrastive Language-Image Pre-Training) is a neural network trained on a variety of (image, text) pairs.

Use Cases ▼
01

Zero-shot image classification by comparing image embeddings to text descriptions of classes

02

Image search and retrieval using natural language queries

03

Content moderation by detecting unsafe or specific content in images

04

Generating text captions for images by ranking candidate captions

05

Assisting artists and designers in finding similar visual styles via text prompts

06

Enabling accessible applications like visual question answering for visually impaired users

What Problem It Solves ▼

Traditional computer vision models require large amounts of task-specific labeled data and struggle to generalize to new tasks. CLIP addresses this by learning visual concepts from natural language descriptions, enabling zero-shot transfer to a wide range of visual tasks without additional training data. It closes the gap between images and language, allowing users to classify or search images using free-form text.

Key Features ▼
✓

Zero-shot performance rivals fully supervised models on many benchmarks

✓

Simple and efficient: uses natural language to perform vision tasks without fine-tuning

✓

Open-source with pre-trained weights available

✓

Robust to distribution shifts and abstract concepts

Overview

CLIP (Contrastive Language-Image Pre-Training) is a neural network trained on a variety of (image, text) pairs. It can be instructed in natural language to predict the most relevant text snippet given an image, without directly optimizing for the task, similarly to GPT-2 and 3. CLIP uses a ViT-L/14 or ResNet-50x64 architecture to jointly train an image encoder and a text encoder to maximize cosine similarity between correct pairs. This enables zero-shot transfer to downstream tasks like image classification, object detection, and visual reasoning. The model is publicly available via a GitHub repository with pre-trained weights and a Python package for easy integration.
