DashVox
DashVox is a mobile application that allows developers to voice-control AI coding agents (such as Claude Code, Codex) running on their local machines via SSH. It provides a hands-free interface to start, stop, and monitor coding sessions from an iPhone, Apple Watch, car (via CarPlay/Android Auto), or smart glasses. Users can speak requests in natural language, which are transcribed and sent to any configured large language model (e.g., Claude, GPT, Gemini); responses are read aloud through text-to-speech, enabling completely eyes-free interaction. The app features agent mode for autonomously managing multiple coding sessions (frontend, backend, tests), remote session management over SSH, voice-first AI chat for general queries, and integrated web search. Smart connectivity ensures reliable communication with exponential backoff, auto-resume, and idempotent message delivery to handle network interruptions. Security is a priority: a self-hosted backend option keeps all data, SSH keys, and code on the user's own machine without external accounts. Cloud mode uses Firebase Auth for optional sign-in. SSH keys are encrypted at rest. The backend is built in Java 21 with Spring Boot (using H2 for self-hosted or PostgreSQL for cloud), and native apps are developed in SwiftUI for iOS/watchOS and soon Android with Kotlin. DashVox extends existing wearable platforms like Apple Watch and Wear OS to allow quick voice replies. It aims to reduce dependency on screens and keyboards, making AI coding workflows accessible while commuting, walking, or in any hands-busy scenario.

Problem solved
Developers often have long-running AI-assisted coding tasks (e.g., test suites, code generation, refactoring) that require occasional approval or status checks. These cannot be easily managed when away from the keyboard, especially during commutes or hands-busy situations. DashVox solves this by providing a voice-controlled mobile interface that connects to local coding agents over SSH, allowing developers to start, monitor, and approve actions entirely by voice from their phone, car, or watch.
Use cases
- Check the status of multiple AI coding sessions while driving using CarPlay voice commands
- Approve a database migration step hands-free from a smartwatch during a walk
- Start a new frontend coding session with Claude Code from a phone while commuting
- Ask the AI to search the web for a solution to a build error and summarize results aloud
- Switch between backend and test agent sessions by voice without touching a screen
- Receive spoken alerts when a long-running test suite completes, directly on Apple Watch
Audience
- Developers
- ML Engineers
Pros
- Fully voice-driven, hands-free operation from multiple device types
- Works with any LLM provider (Claude, GPT, Gemini, etc.)
- Secure self-hosting option keeps code and data local
- Remote SSH management of coding agents from anywhere
- Smart connectivity features for reliable mobile use
Cons
- Android version still unreleased (coming soon)
- Requires technical setup for self-hosting and SSH configuration
- Limited to managing CLI-based AI coding agents; not a general-purpose voice assistant
