DevSpecs is a local-first command-line interface that keeps a durable 'intent trail' for AI coding agents attached directly to a Git repository.

Use Cases ▼
01

Recover the active AI coding thread after returning to a repository using `ds recent`

02

Create lightweight task specs with packed context, gates, and iteration slices using `ds task`

03

Review an AI agent's changes by comparing source evidence with the recorded intent and next actions

04

Hand off bounded work between AI agents and human developers with clear checkpoints and decisions

05

Index existing repo plans, ADRs, PRDs, and notes into a local SQLite index for quick context retrieval

06

Run disposable experiments on real repositories like FastAPI to learn the workflow without touching your own code

What Problem It Solves ▼

AI coding agents often leave changes in a repository with no explanation of why they were made, what state they are in, or what the next action should be. Git shows what changed, but reconstructing intent and reviewing next steps manually is expensive. DevSpecs solves this by maintaining a local thread of evidence, decisions, checkpoints, and lifecycle state attached to the repo, so humans and agents can recover context before editing.

Key Features ▼
✓

Local-first with no cloud sync or LLM calls, preserving privacy and avoiding extra costs

✓

Works alongside Git and rg rather than replacing them

✓

Lightweight CLI with simple subcommands (`recent`, `task`, `apply`)

✓

Stores durable intent, evidence, decisions, and checkpoints in local files and SQLite

✓

MIT licensed and free to use

Overview

DevSpecs is a local-first command-line interface that keeps a durable 'intent trail' for AI coding agents attached directly to a Git repository. It indexes existing repo artifacts—source, tests, docs, commits, plans, ADRs, PRDs, and notes—into a local SQLite index and records lifecycle state, decisions, evidence, checkpoints, and bounded handoffs. This allows developers to recover why AI-generated changes exist, what passed, and what should happen next without reconstructing context manually.

Full Description ▼

The tool provides subcommands such as `ds recent` to recover the active thread after returning to a repo, `ds task` to create lightweight task specs with packed context and gates, and `ds apply` to continue work. It does not call any LLM and does not sync to the cloud; instead, it emits context that existing coding agents can consume. DevSpecs is designed to complement Git and tools like rg, adding a layer of intent and state on top of source evidence.

DevSpecs can be installed via Homebrew, Scoop, or a Go binary, and it is released under the MIT license. The documentation includes hands-on workflows using the FastAPI repository to demonstrate thread recovery and task handoff loops without modifying user projects.
