Overview

Huminn is a Chrome browser extension that transforms the default new tab page into a local-first RSS news reader. It replaces chrome://newtab entirely, providing a personalized magazine grid of stories from your chosen feeds. Because all feed fetching, parsing, and storage happen directly on your device—with no backend servers or cloud proxies—your reading habits, URLs, and data remain completely private.

Full Description ▼

The interface is designed as a magazine spread, grouping stories in blocks of five with a hero card, three medium cards, and a wide card. It also includes a search bar that supports multiple search engines, a clock, customizable shortcut tiles for quick access to favorite sites, and a floating notification pill alerting you to new stories.

Huminn leverages Chrome's built-in on-device AI capabilities to translate story titles and descriptions into your language and to summarize articles in four formats (key points, TL;DR, teaser, or headline) via a side panel. Translation and summarization run entirely locally; no data is sent to external servers. The AI features require a supported desktop version of Chrome.

Feed management is handled through a drawer where you add RSS URLs, monitor source status, or discover new feeds. A settings drawer controls theme, language preferences, AI options, search engine, and data retention. The extension loads instantly from local cache, ensuring zero network delay when opening a tab.
