Just The Gist
Just The Gist is a free macOS application that converts long-form video and audio content — YouTube links, podcasts, lectures, meeting recordings and conference talks — into clean transcripts and short, structured summaries. It is distributed as a signed and notarized native SwiftUI app for Apple Silicon Macs (M1 or newer) running macOS 14 or later, and requires no account, subscription or API key to use. By default the entire pipeline runs on-device. Speech-to-text uses Whisper running locally on Apple Silicon — the developer cites support for roughly 100 languages and a transcription speed of about 2.8x realtime — and a built-in local language model is downloaded on first launch to generate summaries on the machine. Because of this local-first design, audio never leaves the user's computer. Cloud AI providers such as Anthropic, OpenAI and OpenRouter are supported as optional alternatives, and the app can also connect to any OpenAI-compatible local server, including Ollama and LM Studio. A 'Magic Copy' option hands users the transcript plus prompt for pasting into a cloud chatbot manually. Summaries are presented with a TL;DR section, key topics, and clickable timestamps that link back to the exact second in the source media. The app accepts YouTube URLs as well as local mp3, m4a, wav, mp4 and mov files, and transcript language and summary language can differ, so a German podcast can be summarized in English. A library view tracks videos, audio, starred items and in-progress transcriptions along with total transcribed hours. The tool is free with no locked features and is sustained by donations through Ko-fi, with a roughly monthly release-notes newsletter.

Problem solved
Long videos, podcasts and lectures carry a small amount of useful information spread across an hour or more of speech, which is slow to review and hard to search. Just The Gist addresses this by transcribing that media locally and producing a short, timestamped summary, so a two-hour recording can be understood in a few minutes — without uploading audio to a third-party service, creating an account, or paying a subscription.
Use cases
- Summarizing long YouTube videos, interviews and conference talks into a short timestamped read
- Transcribing and gisting podcasts without uploading audio to a cloud service
- Turning lecture recordings into study notes with links to key moments
- Summarizing meeting recordings and voice memos stored locally on a Mac
- Producing transcripts for non-English audio and summarizing them in a different language
- Generating a summary with a local Ollama or LM Studio model for privacy-sensitive content
- Preparing a transcript and prompt for manual pasting into claude.ai or ChatGPT
