PageIndex
PageIndex is a vectorless, reasoning-based RAG engine that mirrors how humans read, delivering traceable, explainable, and context-aware retrieval, with no vector DBs or chunking. It replaces the vector index with a hierarchical tree index and lets an LLM reason its way through it, the way a human expert turns to and reads the right section of a long report. The engine is designed for long and complex professional documents, such as financial reports, legal documents, regulatory filings, technical manuals, medical literature, and academic textbooks. PageIndex provides a Python SDK for local and cloud-based document indexing and retrieval, with support for various LLM models and compatibility with the OpenAI Agents SDK and other frameworks.

Problem solved
PageIndex solves the problem of inaccurate retrieval in long and complex documents, where vector-based RAG methods often fail to provide relevant results due to their reliance on semantic similarity rather than relevance. By using a hierarchical tree index and LLM reasoning, PageIndex provides a more accurate and context-aware retrieval method, allowing users to efficiently search and retrieve information from large documents.
Use cases
- Financial document analysis
- Legal document review
- Regulatory filing analysis
- Technical manual search
- Medical literature research
- Academic textbook search

Pros
- Highly accurate retrieval
- Context-aware search
- Compatible with various LLM models
- Supports local and cloud-based deployment
Cons
- Limited support for image-rich documents
- Requires LLM model integration
- May require additional setup for large-scale deployment
