Overview

QuotaWatch is a VS Code extension designed to help developers monitor their OpenAI Codex CLI usage directly within the editor. It displays real-time quota information—usage percentage, burn rate in points per minute, and time remaining until quota reset—in the VS Code status bar. The extension operates entirely locally with no telemetry, no network requests, and no account requirement, ensuring privacy and minimal overhead.

Full Description ▼

The free tier includes configurable threshold alerts at 50%, 75%, 90%, and 95% of quota, as well as velocity alerts that detect unusually fast consumption, such as runaway loops. It also performs repository analysis to identify files that waste AI context (e.g., lockfiles, build outputs, large assets) and generates a markdown report with an AI readiness score. Users can configure the status bar polling interval between 3 and 60 seconds.

The Pro tier, available as a one-time purchase of $5.99, adds a canvas-based usage chart webview with current, peak, and average statistics, CSV export of usage history, daily and weekly summary notifications, usage prediction that estimates when the quota limit will be reached, custom alert thresholds, and a .codexignore generator that automatically creates ignore files to reduce token waste. It also auto-imports up to 90 days of historical Codex session data on first run.

QuotaWatch aims to replace reactive surprise with proactive awareness, helping developers avoid hitting Codex CLI rate limits mid-session and reduce unnecessary token consumption. It is particularly useful for individuals and teams using Codex CLI for coding assistance who want to manage costs and stay within usage limits without leaving their development environment.
