SWE Agent
SWE-agent is an open-source system that enables large language models (LMs) to autonomously resolve GitHub issues by interacting directly with a computer environment. It provides an agent-computer interface (ACI) that translates LM commands into executable actions such as file navigation, editing, and running tests, allowing the LM to iteratively modify code and verify fixes. The tool is designed to work with any LM of choice via API or local deployment, and it has demonstrated strong performance on the SWE-bench benchmark for software engineering tasks. The project originated from research at Princeton University and was accepted at NeurIPS 2024. It is built as a modular framework that can be extended to new environments and tasks beyond bug fixing, including offensive cybersecurity and competitive coding challenges. Users can configure the agent with custom prompts, tools, and execution environments to suit their needs. SWE-agent is distributed as a Python package and can be installed from source or via pip. It includes a command-line interface for running agent sessions, as well as a web interface for interactive exploration. The repository provides extensive documentation and examples to help users get started quickly.

Problem solved
SWE-agent automates the process of fixing software bugs described in GitHub issues by letting a language model autonomously explore, edit, and test code within a repository. It reduces the manual effort required for routine bug resolution and can also be repurposed for security testing and solving competitive programming problems.
Use cases
