Transformer Explainer is an open-source interactive web application developed by the Polo Club at Georgia Tech to demystify the inner workings of Transformer-based large language models.

Use Cases ▼
01

Learning how attention mechanisms work through interactive visualizations

02

Teaching Transformer architecture in machine learning courses

03

Debugging or sanity-checking model attention behavior on custom inputs

04

Presenting LLM internals in workshops or conference talks

05

Exploring text generation settings such as temperature and top-k sampling

06

Self-paced learning for developers new to LLMs

What Problem It Solves ▼

Transformer models are often treated as black boxes, making it difficult for learners and even practitioners to understand why they make certain predictions. Transformer Explainer addresses this by providing an interactive, visual breakdown of each step in the Transformer pipeline, reducing the barrier to understanding and enabling users to explore model behavior in real time.

Key Features ▼
✓

Highly interactive and intuitive visual interface

✓

Runs entirely in the browser, no setup required

✓

Open source and free to use

✓

Covers all major components of Transformer architecture

✓

Useful for both beginners and advanced users

Overview

Transformer Explainer is an open-source interactive web application developed by the Polo Club at Georgia Tech to demystify the inner workings of Transformer-based large language models. It runs entirely in the browser and allows users to input text and observe how each token flows through a multi-layer Transformer architecture.

Full Description ▼

The tool visualizes key components such as tokenization, embedding, positional encoding, multi-head self-attention, feed-forward networks, and output probability distributions. Users can click on individual attention heads to inspect attention weights between tokens, and adjust temperature or top-k sampling to see generation dynamics.

By making abstract concepts concrete, Transformer Explainer serves as an educational resource for students, researchers, and practitioners who want to build intuition about how models like GPT process and generate text. It is ideal for classroom demonstrations, self-study, and conference presentations.

The project is hosted on GitHub under the Polo Club organization, is free to use, and can be easily launched locally or accessed via the provided live demo.
