VisitorType is a first-party AI channel analytics tool designed to identify, verify, and measure traffic originating from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot.

Use Cases ▼
01

Attribute conversions and visits from AI-generated referrals to specific AI platforms

02

Reduce wasted ad spend by ensuring ad pixels fire only for verified human visitors

03

Track which AI assistants and crawlers are accessing your website over time

04

Verify the authenticity of AI agent claims using IP range validation

05

Inject canonical facts for AI search bots to improve content visibility

06

Push AI traffic source data into Google Analytics or other analytics tools for unified reporting

What Problem It Solves ▼

Traditional web analytics fail to attribute traffic from AI assistants, classifying valuable AI-referred visits as 'Direct' and making it impossible to measure the ROI of AI visibility efforts. Additionally, without verification, many claimed AI crawlers are impostors, polluting data and wasting ad budgets on non-human traffic.

Identifies AI-generated referral traffic that typical analytics miss

✓

Verifies agent identity against vendor IP ranges to flag impostors

✓

Lightweight 3KB snippet with no cookies required

Overview

VisitorType is a first-party AI channel analytics tool designed to identify, verify, and measure traffic originating from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot. By embedding a lightweight JavaScript snippet on a website, VisitorType detects when a visitor comes from an AI-generated response and attributes the visit to the correct AI platform, providing data that traditional analytics typically misclassify as 'Direct' traffic.

Full Description ▼

The tool solves the problem of invisible AI referrals by offering verified visit attribution, weekly reporting on AI-driven traffic trends, and the ability to push these insights into existing analytics systems like Google Analytics 4. It also verifies the authenticity of AI crawler and bot claims by checking against vendors’ published IP ranges, flagging impostors that merely spoof user-agent strings.

Beyond measurement, VisitorType includes a rules engine (similar to Google Tag Manager) that allows users to conditionally fire tags: for example, serving canonical facts to AI search bots while firing ad pixels only for verified humans. This helps reduce wasted ad spending on non-human traffic and improves marketing attribution for AI-referred visitors.

The platform offers a free plan, supports multiple integrations, and is used by over 50 websites. Its own deployment on VisitorType’s site revealed that 6.4% of visits were human, while the rest were crawlers and agents, with about two-thirds of AI bot claims failing IP verification. The snippet is only 3 KB and requires no cookies.
