Overview

zclaw is an open-source firmware designed to turn inexpensive ESP32 microcontrollers into functional AI personal assistants. Written entirely in C, it is engineered to be the smallest possible implementation, with a default firmware size of less than 888 KiB. This makes it ideal for constrained embedded devices while still providing core assistant capabilities. The firmware supports real-time wake word detection, audio capture, and integration with cloud-based large language models (LLMs) for natural language understanding and response generation. It can output synthesized speech or control connected hardware. By leveraging the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth features of the ESP32, zclaw can connect to various AI services and smart home devices. The project is actively maintained on GitHub and provides configuration files for multiple ESP32 board variants, including the ESP32-S3-BOX-3 and ESP32-T-Relay, ensuring broad hardware compatibility. Users can customize wake words, prompts, and behaviors to create a tailored assistant experience. The build system uses ESP-IDF, and an installation script simplifies flashing the firmware onto a device. Despite its tiny size, zclaw demonstrates that powerful AI features can be embedded in low-cost, everyday electronics.
