Ownvox
Ownvox is a desktop dictation and AI voice assistant for macOS and Windows. It enables users to speak into any application and have their words transcribed locally using Whisper, with text inserted directly at the cursor via a global hotkey. The app operates system-wide, so it works across email clients, browsers, code editors, note apps, and terminals without plugins or copy-paste. Beyond basic dictation, Ownvox offers a voice prompt mode that passes selected text as context to AI models and can return answers directly at the cursor. It also includes customizable AI Skills: predefined or user-created prompt templates that transform selected text (e.g., summarize, rewrite, format) through a radial menu. Privacy is a core focus: transcription runs on-device by default, the app includes a privacy switch, and users can optionally connect their own API keys for cloud-based AI features.
