Overview

TheFile.Ninja is a programmable local-first file workspace currently in public beta. It combines file management, instant search, automation, versioned backup, and secure transfer into one desktop application. The tool is built around the philosophy that search results, virtual folders, backup snapshots, and live directories should all share a consistent interface, allowing users to navigate and act on files without switching context.

Full Description ▼

At its core, TheFile.Ninja integrates Everything SDK for near-instant search across millions of files. Users can write queries using EQL syntax, refine results, save them as Smart Folders, and use the result set as a live workspace. The application also provides a dual-pane interface, tabs, tags, themes, and metadata views.

For automation, TheFile.Ninja includes a Lua scripting engine with over 400 API functions across 26 modules. A built-in cron scheduler supports catch-up policies, and a file system watcher enables real-time event handling. AI assistance is available on a bring-your-own-key basis: users can describe a task in plain English and the tool generates an inspectable Lua script. Other features include content-addressable versioned backups with deduplication, Magic Wormhole peer-to-peer encrypted transfers, Git status columns, grep search, text diff, HTTP client, and JSON tooling.

The product offers a Free Core tier forever and a 30-day Pro trial with no subscription required, making advanced capabilities accessible while keeping core file management free.
