What Problem It Solves ▼

Most AI storytelling relies on a single language model improvising in a loop with no durable state. That produces forgotten details, contradictory outcomes, accidental spoilers and stakes that do not hold. Unwritten AI addresses this by separating a hand-authored scenario and a deterministic rules engine from the AI narrator, so narration is generated freely while health, reputation, promises and story gating are tracked by the engine.

✓

Failed rolls advance the story instead of blocking progress

Overview

Unwritten AI is a narrative text RPG for iOS and Android in which hand-authored scenarios are played alongside an AI narrator. The app is free to play, with a daily allowance of 15 turns and no payment card required to start. Instead of presenting a single open-ended prompt box, it offers a curated catalogue of authored worlds, each written with its own factions, bestiary, companions, central secret and act structure.

Full Description ▼

The central design claim is a split between narration and simulation. An engine sits beneath the prose and keeps the books on health, gold, skill domains, reputation, relationships, dice rolls, combat rounds and act transitions. The narrator writes the scene, but does not decide whether the player survived it. Risky actions are resolved with a d20 against a difficulty set by the stakes, modified by the player's skill in the relevant domain.

Play proceeds in turns. The narrator describes what the previous action cost or earned, the world moves on its own, and the player is offered three suggested paths or may type a free-text action, which the engine interprets by intent rather than keyword matching. Wounds, rank, standing, promises and act transitions are recorded rather than narrated away. Nine worlds shipped at launch, covering tones such as isekai power fantasy, locked-manor mystery and cultivation fantasy, with each scenario altering the app's visual palette and narration style.

Several behaviours are explicitly engine-enforced: facts must be observed in a scene rather than asserted, unrevealed secrets are gated out of the choice list to avoid spoilers, failed rolls push the story in a new direction instead of blocking it, sworn promises are tracked with deadlines and consequences, and companions carry arcs with lines they will not cross. Scenarios run in acts with real endings, including character death, and finished stories can be exported as a formatted chronicle document.
